History
The Kunekune pig breed has its roots in Asia and made way to New Zealand in the early 1800s, brought by whaler and traders. Embraced by the Maori people, these pigs became a vital food source during feasts. Unfortunately, by the mid-20th century, the Kunekune breed faced near extinction due to crossbreeding. However, in 1970, a small population was rediscovered among the Maori, leading to a successful recovery program initiated in the 1980s by wildlife park owners Willis and John Simister. In 1993, the breed expanded its reach when two Kunekune pigs were imported into the United States from the UK.
